Sylvan Tiger is an independent hand dyer based in Yorkshire, England, creating luxury yarn and fibre using natural dyes.

I use wool sourced from British suppliers and where possible from British sheep, processed and spun in Britain. I use natural dyes mostly in extract form which gives better repeatability of colourways and allows me to dye year-round. Every once in a while I'll have 'Limited Edition' dyed with material I've carefully harvested myself from my garden or local environment.

My inspiration for colours and combinations often comes from my local landscapes of Yorkshire, the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. I particularly enjoy exploiting the natural PH sensitivities of the natural dyes to create gentle variations in colour.

My yarns can be used for a variety of work including knitting, crochet, spinning, weaving and felting.

Delivery

All parcels are sent via Royal Mail, Second Class (there is the option to upgrade to First Class post in the checkout if you want your yarn a little quicker!) in the UK and Airmail internationally and will usually be sent within 1-3 working days.

Please allow up to 15 working days for your parcel to arrive in the UK, 20 in Europe and 28 Internationally. Parcels usually arrive more quickly than that, but those are the time limits after which I can report missing parcels to Royal Mail.

Please note that international buyers are responsible for any customs and duty charges that might be applied to a parcel. Please check local information for rates and limits. Please note that I can't mark parcels as 'gifts'.

Parcels are packaged in 100% degradable poly mailer bags to help limit the amount of plastic finding its way into permanent landfill. Please try and reuse them where you can.

Additional policies and FAQs

Yarn and fibre are dyed in small batches, multiple skeins may look alike but will not be identical so please buy what you need to finish a project. If using more than one skein for a project it is recommended to alternate skeins every few rows.

Care Instructions
There are a few things that you can do to help prolong the life of your naturally dyed knitted or crocheted items. Treat them as you would any other wool or delicate items.

It's recommended that you gently hand wash your items in cool water (hand hot, rather the scalding hot), don't agitate them too much and gently squeeze the water out rather than wringing. Use a gentle PH neutral product. Many of the natural dyes are PH and mineral sensitive (it's what I find special about them and what enables many of the subtle colour variations), but that means that if you use a detergent that is very acid or very alkali you might end up modifying the colour in a way you didn't intend! So, stick with a PH neutral product, Fairy Liquid perhaps, and avoid any products with Citric Acid in.

Allow your things to dry naturally, rather than tumble drying, out of direct sunlight. Natural dyes are light fast, but, like synthetic dye, if you leave your items in a sunny window there will be fading over time. Wash dark colours separately.

Yarn and fibre are rinsed carefully until the water runs clear, occasionally a small amount of excess dye may rinse out in the first couple of washes.

Photography
I make every effort to ensure that photographs are an accurate match to real life, but computer monitors do vary a great deal. Some colours may also appear differently under artificial light.
